Independent 20th Century : Barbara LEVITTOUX-ŚWIDERSKA

8 - 11 September 2022
Booth A7
For the inaugural edition of Independent 20th Century, Richard Saltoun Gallery is pleased to present a solo stand of works by Barbara LEVITTOUX-ŚWIDERSKA.

Independent 20th Century will focus on artists who made a significant contribution to art history between the years 1900 and 2000, yet who were uncelebrated in their day. The fair will deliver an inclusive and critical space for the reassessment of women artists, artists of color, and artists from geographical territories and communities outside the major cultural capitals of the world.

Barbara LEVITTOUX-ŚWIDERSKA was one of the most important yet often overlooked textile artists who transformed tapestry from flat decorations to avant-garde installations. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Levittoux-Świderska came to prominence in the 1960s when textile entered into mainstream contemporary art. Like fellow Polish textile artists Magdalena Abakanowicz and Jolanta Owidzka, Levittoux-Świderska followed the Eastern European tradition, incorporating locally sourced materials and rural practices to improvise new textile art-making methods and forms.

In light of the recent over-turning of the Roe v. Wade decision, Richard Saltoun Gallery are planning to donate 10% of our profits of sales made at the Independent fair to support the efforts of Planned Parenthood.
