1-54 London: Booth W19

13 - 16 October 2022

At 1-54 London, Richard Saltoun Gallery presents a stand celebrating the unique vision of three artists: Bertina LOPES, Everlyn NICODEMUS and Jan WADE.

Considered the mother of contemporary African painting, Bertina Lopes was one of the earliest pioneers to bridge the gap between African and European art, and her work has become a symbol of political activism and social criticism.

Like Lopes, Everlyn Nicodemus is one of the strongest feminist voices to emerge from Eastern Africa in the past 50 years. Born in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, and now residing in Edinburgh, she produces powerful works centred on personal and cultural trauma.

Jan Wade has spent three decades on the fringe of the cultural mainstream and is now beginning to receive overdue acknowledgement for her unique contributions to Canadian art. Her artistic journey is marked by self-sufficiency, empowerment, hope and radical joy.
