The Armory Show: Booth 233

6 - 8 September 2024

For The Armory Show 2024, Richard Saltoun Gallery will present a group exhibition of works with a spotlight on African-Canadian artist, Jan WADE (1952 -), on the occasion of her current retrospective Soul Power at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, and the recent acquisiton of her work Epiphany by the National Gallery of Canada.

A highlight of the presentation will be a new iteration of Wade's iconic work, Epiphany (1996 - ). This installation features a variable number of crosses made from found pieces of wood and adorned with thrift store finds and objects linked to African-American culture, serving as a monument to cultural survival and perseverance. It was initially exhibited at the historic 1st Johannesburg Biennale AFRICUS (1995).

Another highlight is a monumental painting by New York-based South African artist, Vivienne KOORLAND, entitled FOREST (2019-2022). Koorland's works are typically built of rough, raw materials, oil paint and pigment on stitched cloth, texts, painted and glued, ephemera –photographs, cigarette cards, newsprint and book spines - on linen canvas. Detailed and often huge in size, her paintings are direct responses to war, migration and colonisation, both personal and addressing a global condition.

Additional works will be on view by American artist Carole SEBOROVSKI (b. 1960)Romany EVELEIGH (1934 - 2020), who is included in this year's Venice Biennale, Fathi HASSAN (1957 -), who was in the 2023 Sharjah Biennale, Neda AL HILALI (1938-) and XIYADIE (1963 -), following his exhibition Queer Cut Utopias at the Drawing Center, New York in 2023.
