For artgenéve 2025, Richard Saltoun Gallery presents a solo presentation (Booth B9) dedicated to Algerian artist BAYA (1931–1998).
Baya was a trailblazing Algerian artist and an early feminist pioneer whose practice is at the intersection of Surrealism and Naïve Art. At just 16 years old, she held her first solo exhibition in Paris in 1947, capturing the admiration of famous Surrealist, André Breton, and Pablo Picasso, who was influenced by her distinctive style. Recently, BAYA's work has been celebrated in major museum exhibitions, including Baya, Femmes en Leur Jardin at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (2022–2023) and a retrospective at the Sharjah Art Museum in the UAE (2021). The gallery's presentation at artgenève will include a selection of her iconic, vibrant paintings from the 1970-90s that draw on Algerian heritage, collective memory, and a uniquely female perspective in a way that was ahead of her time.
The stand will also include additional works on view by:
Carmen Dionyse, Romany EVELEIGH, Reena SAINI KALLAT, Bice LAZZARI, Marie LAURENCIN, Juliana SERAPHIM, Véronique FILOZOF. and Ria VERHAEGHE.
