For its inaugural participation in Art Dubai, the gallery presents a group exhibition of four pivotal female artists who have all exhibited at the Venice Biennale;
British-Italian Romany EVELEIGH (Foreigners Everywhere, 2024); Malaysian-born, Sydney-based Simryn GILL (Here art grows on trees, Australian Pavilion, 2013); Mozambican-Italian Bertina LOPES (Coexistence of Tradition and Modernity in Contemporary Mozambique, Mozambique Pavilion, 2015; Foreigners Everywhere, 2024) and Austrian-Italian Greta SCHÖDL (Materializzazione del Linguaggio, Visual Arts and Architecture section, 1978; Foreigners Everywhere, 2024).
The stand brings together Samira Abbassy's surrealist paintings drawing on Persian miniatures and Qajar court painting traditions, Simryn Gill’s delicate ink rubbings of invasive plants on paper, Eveleigh’s serene minimalist paintings, and Schödl’s luminous works on paper and canvas, distinguished by her signature use of gold leaf. A highlight of the presentation will be two seminal paintings by Bertina Lopes—Viagem [Journey] I and Viagem [Journey] II—first shown in her landmark 1972 exhibition at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon. Created during Mozambique’s war of independence from Portugal, these works capture a defining moment in both the artist’s career and the country’s history. Lopes will also be included in the São Paulo Art Biennial later this year.
