Stele IV was painted as her final degree project for Painting under Wolfgang Hollegha at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. It depicts two worms intertwined, two lovers coming together as one. The colours are soft gradations of pale pink and cream.
Stele IV is part of Bertlmann series of Grabstele (Grave-Steles) paintings: the most important series of paintings she made in the 1970s. Bertlmann made around 20 paintings at this time and then moved on to sculpture, performance and photography. Drawing has remained as a central practice throughout.
