The five photographs that make up ‘Photo Therapy: Work on Emotional Eating’ show Jo Spence covered in sugar, playfully sprinkling it on and over herself, then licking it out of the palm of her hand. Her face shows pure enjoyment. Although her battle with her weight was a constant source of trauma, the enjoyment that she derived from eating was at odds with her dissatisfaction with her body. Regardless, Jo Spence never shied away from photographing herself naked: even when she was at her heaviest, her body was her medium, and she was never ashamed of it. This work is a very classic attempt to get at the roots of her emotional eating.
