Bertlmann made around 20 paintings during the 1970s,.
Renate Bertlmann’s 'Stele VI' (1974) humorously depicts three floppy, exhausted and flaccid worm-like organs resting on a panel of sorts. As in other works from the same series, 'Spot VI' outlines a co-existence of binary oppositions, which defy fixed gendered connotations: tender versus hard, round versus square, or feminine versus masculine.
