Renate Bertlmann’s 'Magic Tower - The Unicorn - Model' (1990) is a bright pink papier-mâché sculpture in which an erect, phallic form rises from an uncannily hairy ground.

This unreal, abject, fantastical object is rich in surrealist connotations and plays on Meret Oppenheim’s 'Object' (1936) (a fur-lined teacup, saucer, and spoon).

As in other sculptural works, the Perspex box is used not only as a protective device, but it also assumes the connotations of a prison in which the phallus is symbolically kept under lock and key.
