It’s been an important side of what I do, giving and getting ideas from young people. The cuts in education in Britain started in the 1980s, and they’ve been growing and growing, with students now having to pay to go to university and take out loans. I wanted to make a generic image about cuts, using a simple image of a skeleton and placing it into a graduation gown with mortarboard on its head. It has been recently used as part of a national strike where I teach [at the Royal College of Art] just before lockdown. The image was used as a poster to raise funds for lecturers who were going to be in trouble because of the strike and who were going to lose money. It’s an image that continues to be important because education is still being cut in [the United Kingdom].” – Peter Kennard1of 3
