Solidarność was originally formed by workers in the Lenin shipyards in Gdańsk in 1980 and advocated non-violent resistance to Soviet control. After 1981, for a period of about 18 months, thousands of political dissidents were thrown in jail, and Kennard was asked to make a poster by the Polish Solidarity Campaign, a global movement to raise funds for Solidarność. The image was made and given to the campaign, like several other works made by Kennard whose images were used by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Civil Rights Movement and Amnesty International, amongst others. Kennard considers this an incredibly important part of his work. Whilst it is important for his images to be seen in a gallery context as works of art, they equally have life outside art institutions in the wider community, to be used by citizens to protest and fight for their rights.Exhibitions
