‘London after the Bomb’ (1985) is part of a series of works gathered together as the portfolio ‘Target London’, commissioned by the Greater London Council led by Ken Livingston, to show the hypothetical effect of nuclear weapons on London. These messages countered those offered by the Thatcher Government’s public safety message of ‘Protect and Survive,’ which suggested Londoners close their net curtains to shield from a nuclear blow. This iconic image by Kennard shows Tower bridge cast in an end-of-the-world apocalyptic scene.
