The sex toy stands in as the surrogate here not for the seducing, pleasuring phallus, but the sexual aggressor. The threat of rape was not theoretical – Hunter’s work Dialogue with a Rapist (1978) was based on her encounter with a would-be rapist one night in Bermondsey. As with other works in the Approach to Fear series, there is intentional ambiguity – it is hard to make out what is happening, or to reduce the action into an easily digestible message.Exhibitions
