At the time I made this work I was exploring the difference between still and moving images by creating sequences of photographic images that I would repeat like cinematic edits. I was also experimenting with super 8mm film animation and this led me to draw on transparent animation cells with an ink pen to be able to combine the drawn and photographic image - a sort of light etching*. Images I was exploring at the time included naked figures in the landscape - my models were friends and family members - but I also took photographs of myself - as in these collages. Many elements that I often returned to in later works are present in these early vignettes: wings, feathers, curtains, veils as well as the allegorical references such as the dryads in these collages.
[* Technical detail: I placed the animation cell with the ink drawing over a piece of photographic paper in the darkroom and exposed the paper to the negative photograph image in the enlarger so that the drawn image and photographic image were superimposed onto the photographic paper.]
