Annegret Soltau's Meine verlorenen Haare [My lost hair], 1977 will be included in Folkwang Museum's upcoming exhibition Grow It, Show It! in Essen.
Meine verlorenen Haare [My lost hair], 1977, is one of the more unusual works in Annegret Soltau's practice: a 365-page diary of hair loss, the typed and dated pages have small bundles of hair placed in the centre, creating a subtle but beautiful portrayal of ageing, change, and the inability to control one’s own physical body. Each month is contained within a plastic folder (a narrative supplemented by the 11 vintage photographs documenting her hair loss).
Grow It, Show It! explores the historical, political and everyday cultural significance of hair through a wide range of historical and contemporary photographs, videos and film clips from art as well as fashion and social media. The comprehensive exhibition shows that hair is always a carrier of information. The way we wear our hair is not only determined by the pursuit of beauty ideals, but has always been politically and socially charged as an identity-forming feature, a ritual symbol of power, a spiritual material and a communicator of social status.
The exhibition runs 13 September 2024 - 12 January 2025.
