Et in Arcadia (1995) is a photo etching of a beetle. It is printed on marble and presented in a clam shell box, in an edition of 15. Emerging about 270 million years ago, beetles have been prominent in human culture throughout history, from the sacred scarabs of ancient Egypt to beetlewing art and as use as pets or fighting insects for entertainment or gambling. Closer inspection of Chadwick’s representation of the insect, reveals a resemblance to the male phallus. Here, however, it is reduced to the level of a lowly insect, conserved on a cold marble plate and stored inside a box to be opened and inspected.
