My work is rooted in lived experiences—a conversation, an event, the reading of a book or article often serves as the spark. In the works on paper exhibited in Lovesick: Bodies in Flux, I show my explorations of gender identity by blending female and male body parts (Him, Her, and Others), the fierce maternal instinct emerging after my daughter’s sexual assault (Clawsing), and an effort to bridge my sculptural practice with my drawings by integrating materials from my sculptures. In First Cycle, the drawings were created during a period of intense grief. While raw in emotion at the time, they reflect a reawakening—fertile with hope and vitality. Piss Drawings allude to the only instance in which I can imagine experiencing penis envy: the ability to urinate standing up. Finally, there is LaLi, a warrior character whose name is inspired by my slogan, "I Lack it, I Like it." LaLi loves to have a good time while offering men deeper, more penetrating, possibilities to consider.- Ingrid Berthon-Moine
